This mathematics Q&A website called "Maths Hunter" is under development within the Centre for Computer-Assisted Research Mathematics and its Applications (CARMA) at the University of Newcastle. This is an educational resource aimed in the first instance toward school students, particularly secondary school students.
The aim of the project is to provide a resource for students to go to in order to ask mathematics questions, complementing resources provided within schools, and which is available at no cost to the student or school. The site is aimed at being useful to students (and parents, teachers, etc!) as well as generally promoting an interest in mathematics.
The project is inspired by the popular American site "Ask Dr Math", but is Australian in flavour and focus, and intends to provide Australian students across the continent with a shared resource which alleviates isolation and enriches education.
The website is currently available in trial version to a small number of schools and students. Answerers on the site are university-level mathematics and education students as well as staff. All content on the site is moderated. The Answerers are mentored by an experienced educationalist, in addition to peer mentoring.
A subsidiary aim of the project is to enhance the professional development of university students in the teaching space, and to increase the interaction between students in mathematics and education. The site is expected to be more widely available in 2012. The project is sponsored by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute.
